Well 2012 was a strange year. It started with frequent trips to hospitals with Eve (my wife) for her chemotherapy, seeing her being pumped full of poison! That and all the CT scans and other appointments meant I was eating rubbish when not sat in a hospital waiting room! I tipped the scales at 23st3lbs! That was about a 4 - 4 1/2 stone gain in just 12 months since she was diagnosed. I was fat and unfit, walking up the stairs left me out of breath and walking around town shopping meant needing a change of clothes from the sweat! I was in a right mess.
Then I heard an advert on Real Radio about a competition they were running with The Journal and Dave Fairlamb Fitness. I filled out the online form and hoped for the best! After getting an interview I was desperate to get onto the process, luckily I was picked as one of the Active8.
The first training session showed how bad I had got, I couldn't run the length of a five-a-side pitch. Plenty of hard work, and 12 weeks later, and the unbelievable had happened. I had dropped nearly 4 stones and my fitness was better than I could ever have imagined! But much better than any of that, I had made some friends for life. Some of the most genuinely lovely people were involved in the Fit Factor and the help and support we all gave each other made the whole thing such a great experience.
Since the end of June I have completed 2 10km races, 2 half marathons and 6 park runs (5km races) and they're just the officially timed runs. On top of that I have continued to go to the gym every week, play squash and badminton, go swimming and I try to run at least 10 miles a week around the streets! I have gone from an out of shape, unfit and unhealthy person to someone who loves exercising (especially running) and feels bad if I can't get out and hit the streets for a run and all that in a year!
So what does 2013 have in store for me?
I intend to complete at least 3 10km races, another 2 half marathons (I want to break the 2 hour mark this year) and lose about another 5 stones at least! And of course I'm going to continue going to the gym!
If you're reading this and you're unhappy with your fitness or body, I urge you to sign up for this year's Fit Factor. With hard work and determination you will be given the best opportunity to change your life.
